A PIECE of France has arrived in Barnsley as South Yorkshire’s only petanque terrain has been opened.

The French sport, which is similar to boules, has been given a new playing field in Penistone with regular playtimes for members of the recently-founded Ingbirchworth Petanque Club.

Situated behind The Fountain pub, the terrain opened on October 12 and serves the club of nearly 30 members who play on Thursday afternoons and Sunday mornings.

A spokesperson said: “Others interested in using the grounds are invited to do so freely, as the new terrain is being treated as a public addition to the recreational facilities of Penistone.
