TWO GIRLS from Barnsley helped England win team golds at the Schools Cross Country Internationals in Ireland.

Graihagh Turner, from Penistone, was part of the intermediate mixed relay team, finishing leg one with a healthy lead which ensured her team returned with the gold medal. Maya Schofield, from Royston, was part of the junior mixed relay team who also claimed gold.

Jonson Hughes, from Darfield, won gold at under 17 level at the Northern Road Relay Championships in Manchester over 5k.

Penistone Footpath Runner George Parr finished in first place at the Chicken Run fell race in Hayfield. First back for Barnsley Harriers was Kelly Ford, followed very closely by Stephen Burnley.

Penistone’s Pete Beever travelled to Dalby Forest 10k in North Yorkshire.

He finished in 54-56 for 57th out of 163.

Two Penistone runners took on the brutal 21-mile Edale Skyline fell race on Sunday, with 4505 feet of climbing.

James Fryers started the race strongly and held on for 74th position, just a few minutes behind club-mate Richard Cottam in 68th who is training for the Bob Graham Round – a 24-hour running challenge in the Lake District.

At the Cheshire Elite 10k, Barnsley AC duo Gary Briscoe and Josh Bird both recorded PBs. Gary knocked 36 seconds, off with 32-09, while Josh ran 32-58, ten seconds quicker than his previous best.

Barnsley AC’s Alan Nutton took 21 seconds off his PB at the Wilmslow Half Marathon in 1-25-02. Sarah Burton finished in 2-09-46.

Penistone Showground was the venue for Sunday’s 45th running of the Yorkshire Vets Cross Country Championships. Barnsley Harriers won the men’s over35 team event while Paul Johnson was second over35 man, Rich Spooner third over40 man and Jess Holt was second over35 woman. In the 10k race, Barnsley AC’s Scott Hinchcliffe finished second overall and first over35 man in a time of 36-56. Christina Laking took the over40 women’s bronze medal, finishing in 48-12.

In the 5k race, Anne Bennett took the bronze medal in the over70 women’s category. Her time was 36-00. Joining Anne were Faye Lund (28-32), Rod Scholes (31-27) and Linda Westlake (34-08).

At the first DonFaster 5k of the year on Friday, Barnsley AC’s Chris McNicholas finished as second over60 man and took 30 seconds off his PB with a time of 18-55.

Chris continued his form at the Wakefield 10k, taking first over60 man in 39-03. Jenny Wakeman was first over65 woman with 49-41.

There were PBs for Harriers David Hanks, who won his age category, Alistair Wilkie, Becky Kenyon and Catherine Stone.

Penistone’s John and Dawn Broom completed the Wymondham 20-mile race. John got round in 2-44-05 to finish in 198th, while Dawn set a club record for the over60 women’s category with a time of 2-44-43 to take 204th spot.

There were ParkRun first places for Penistone’s Tom Fryers at Milton Country, James Mumford at Lister Park and Suzanne McGill at Penistone, while Rob Lees finished second at Northallerton. At the Middleton Woods ParkRun, Andrew Taylor completed his 200th ParkRun.
