Pakistani all-rounder Zohaib Ahmad had his best day in a Barnsley shirt so far on Sunday as he smashed 157 off 134 balls to secure a win over Sheffield United in the Yorkshire League Cup quarter-final.

Ahmad, who was in Pakistan's provisional squad for the Twenty20 World Cup earlier this year, bashed 20 fours and three sixes as he hit Barnsley's first century of the season and led them to a huge 315 for seven off 45 overs.

United fell 46 runs short as the Shaw Laners completed an excellent weekend which began with them bowling hosts Castleford out for 61 having themselves been skittled for 100 in the Yorkshire League on Saturday. Ahmad's century took him to 399 runs in nine matches this season and made him the club's top-scorer.

"Zohaib has been looking for a big score since joining us and it was an awesome knock," said captain Steven Nuttall.

"When we signed him, we thought he was a bowling all-rounder but it's clear that batting is the strongest part of his game.

He's still one of the top five seam bowlers in the league but, in my opinion, he's the best batsman and he could score the most runs in the league this season."
