An eight-year-old boy from Athersley North received a letter from the Queen.

Aidan Simpson, of Ollerton Road, wrote a letter to Her Majesty in December, wishing her and the Royal family a Merry Christmas.

He also sent a picture he had drawn of the Queen walking with her Corgis.

His mum, Donna, said they never expected a response.

Aidan's mum, Donna said: "He only wrote Buckingham Palace, London on the envelope. We sent it but didn't ever think he'd get anything back.

"The post came and he saw his name on the envelope. We couldn't believe it."

Aidan says it felt 'amazing' to receive the letter.

He said: "I wanted to write to the Queen because it was the Diamond Jubilee and it was coming up to Christmas."

The year four pupil surprised classmates at Richard Newman Primary, Athersley, when he took the letter into school on Monday.

"I read it out in class and one of them said it was fake but I told them it wasn't."

The response from Her Majesty thanked Aidan for his kind thoughts in his letter.
