AIRMAN John Plummer has notched up seven successive half marathons on the dusty roads of his desert base for good causes.

The 37-year-old father-of-two from Worsbrough, is serving with 83 Expeditionary Air Group in the Middle East and is no stranger to raising money while serving overseas.

On previous RAF operations around the world his physical fund-raisers have included pounding out 100 miles on a treadmill and scaling the height of Mount Everest on a climbing wall.

Except this time it was personal.

Corporal Plummer, who is married to Tracey, was diagnosed with osteoarthritis in his hip last year.

But rather than let the niggling pain get him down or interfere with his fitness regime, he pulled on his running shoes after work to run a week's worth of half marathons.

"The hardest run was the first one because I started too early in the afternoon and the heat nearly beat me," said Cpl Plummer, who raised £560 for Arthritis Research UK and Cancer Research UK.

"I learned my lesson after that and from then on started out in the dusk."

The evening starts still meant running in temperatures of 30 degrees C and with the help of a trusty GPS in his watch, Cpl Plummer calculated he ran 91.7 miles and burned 14,000 calories.
