With his distinctive dialect and no-nonsense blunt attitude to life, Alan Smedley has become a bit of a star after appearing in a television advert for a supermarket.

The 74-year-old retired engineer, and friend of Barnsley's former world champion fisherman Dick Clegg, was filmed fishing for trout on the River Don for Aldi, in which he waxes lyrical about hot cross buns.

It is his punchline 'the old trout also likes hot cross buns - but she's at 'ome so I'll eyt these' that has caused the most amusement.

But wife Valerie admits she is now avoiding Barnsley market because she doesn't want shoppers telling her she's 'an old trout'.

Alan got the call to audition from his local fishing club and turned up wearing a green fishing suit and tweed hat complete with fishing flies tucked into it.

"I think that's what swung it for me because the other three blokes just had woolly hats on so they looked like they were fishing from a trawler, but with my natty hat complete with flies I looked like a proper trout fisherman," Alan said.
