A Barnsley pub has closed amid a two week £80,000 refurbishment.

Chambers, a converted former bank on Peel Square, is owned by Heineken's pub business, Star Pubs and Bars and leased by local man Danny Stuart.

It will mean the bar area is increased by 25 per cent, a gourmet coffee service is being introduced and a DJ booth installed.

Danny, who took over Chambers a year ago and has two other businesses in Barnsley, said: "I've lived in Barnsley all my life and can remember Chambers when it was a bank, I never dreamed I'd end up running it one day."

Chris Jowsey, the trading director of Star Pubs and Bars, said it is delighted to be investing in Chambers' long term future.

"It's tough running a pub with increasing competition for customers' disposable income.

"What we need is real investment, innovation and professionalism in the pub sector to continue to attract customers back to the great British pub."

It is expected to reopen on February 21.
