A bid has been submitted to help transform Barnsley's Victorian shopping arcade and George Yard and attract more customers.
Barnsley Council has lodged the bid for £100,000 under the second round of the government's Portas Pilot.
It would see the area transformed with improvements aimed at encouraging more independent traders in the area.
If the bid for £100,000 is successful developments will include:
• A new retail space for smaller retailers to share;
• Financial support for new independent traders;
• Weekend and seasonal markets, with stalls for £10;
• Shop-front improvements;
• Reduced rate units for college students.
Coun Linda Burgess is responsible for development and culture. She said it would re-energise The Lanes and George Yard.
"We see this project as fundamental in developing a specialist, independent retail area which will complement the retail offer provided by some of the larger businesses in the central markets and pedestrian precinct areas," she said.
She admitted the arcade had suffered in the recession but added that coupled with an increase in marketing more customers could be attracted.
