Andrew Appleyard scored 15 points and Tom Bagnall claimed a late match-winning try as Barnsley came from 14-0 down at half-time to beat West Leeds 20-19 at Shaw Lane on Saturday.
The town team are still fifth in Yorkshire League Two, eight points behind the promotion places. Coach Mark Smith still believes they could sneak into the top two but is more focused on developing young players after picking nine under 22s in his 18-man squad on Saturday.
"We are giving youngsters experience and it is an investment for the future," said Smith. "We will try to win all our games from now until the end of the season and see where we end up in the table."
West Leeds scored a converted try after five minutes and another midway through the half to go 14-0 up at the break. Appleyard got the Shaw Laners on the scoresheet four minutes into the second period with a penalty after an impressive clearance by Chris Peel.
Appleyard then scored a try, which he converted, after good work by Marlon Wragg and and man of the match Jack Isles. Appleyard got another penalty but the visitors scored an unconverted try to go 19-13 up with 20 minutes left. After West Leeds had a man sinbinned, Bagnall forced his way over and Appleyard converted to win it.
Smith said: "It was a game of two halves. We were the better team in the first half but gifted them two tries. "We told the lads not to panic at half-time because we knew we would have enough chances to win. "We won the second half 20-5."
