THE Arctic Monkeys made history after winning Brit Awards for both best group and album of the year for the third time.

The band, which played its first gig in Barnsley at Birdwell WMC in 2005, scooped the awards at Wednesday night's ceremony.

Talking about rock and roll in his acceptance speech, lead singer Alex Turner said: "It seems like it's faded away sometimes but it will never die."

Alex and drummer Matt Helders were taught by the late Richard Tolson, a respected music teacher at Barnsley College who died in September of a rare form of cancer, aged 40.
