A SHOP owner from Barnsley has told of how he was caught up in the drama at Manchester airport.

The airport was closed last Tuesday afternoon after a Qatar Airways flight from Doha was guided in by Typhoon fighter jets after a man on board claimed he had a bomb.

Ron Ford, who owns five Costcutter stores across Barnsley, said his Monarch flight from Majorca, was due to land five minutes after the Qatar Airways plane.

He said: "We had been due back at 1.20pm and had been in the holding area before landing for about 10 minutes when there was an announcement from the pilot that Manchester airport was shut and we were being diverted to Birmingham.

"When we got to Birmingham I got on to Sky News and was telling the crew on board what was happening in Manchester."

He said they were kept on the plane for two hours before a decision was made to fly back to Manchester.

"We eventually landed back at 4pm and as we came through customs there were lots of press asking if we had been on the Qatar flight."It's something to talk about," he added.
