THE road through Birdwell to the M1 has been named the second worst road in the country, based on data from the Department of Transport.

Nearly 60 per cent of all journeys are delayed according to analysis of the figures done by the WeLoveAnyCar.com website.

Lee Spencer, 44, of The Walk, Birdwell, said queues heading towards the motorway routinely stretch as far as Birdwell News, which is three-quarters of a mile from the junction 36, but when the M1 is congested it stretches back to the petrol station - more than a mile from the motorway.

Coun Roy Miller said: "The A61 and the motorway junction are the (national) Highways Agency's responsibility, not the council's. But local members have expressed concerns to us and we have forward them to the Highways Agency.

"They need to do something to do something with the roundabout to improve the flow."
