A YOUNGSTER who almost drowned in a Barnsley river has shown slight signs of recovery.

Police yesterday confirmed he was in a critical but stable condition at Sheffield Children's Hospital after being transferred from Leeds General infirmary where his condition was previously described as life-threatening.

The nine-year-old was pulled from the River Dearne at the Dearne Valley Park, Hoyle Mill, last month.

It is thought he had been playing with friends at the park but it is not known how he ended up face down in the water.

The boy was rescued by passing horserider Louise Bennett, 40, of Tredis Close, Monk Bretton, as others stood and watched.
