A Barnsley cancer survivor is appealing for help to raise research funds for leukaemia and lymphoma.

Carol Wojnicki was diagnosed in 2003 with non-Hodgkin lymphoma and received radiotherapy treatment at Sheffield's Weston Park Hospital.

She decided to take part in the 'Race for Life' events to raise money for Cancer Research and has run in five races raising more than £1,000.

In 2011 she suffered a fractured spine and, after medical tests, found the fracture was caused by non-Hodgkin lymphoma returning in an aggressive form.

She said: "I was put on steroids and started a five-month course of chemotherapy. Alongside that I was given a drug called Rituximab which destroys non-Hodgkin lymphoma cells.

This drug wasn't available when I had my first cancer treatment which shows how important research is and the need for money to enable these breakthroughs to enhance survival rates."

Carol started a Barnsley branch of the leukaemia and lymphoma research group in November 2011. So far, she and friends have raised over £800 through activities such as a cake stall and a bucket collection at Barnsley Football Club.
