A BARNSLEY cancer survivor is fighting back against the disease by entering Cancer Research UK's Race for Life.

Carol Micklethwaite, 44, of Royd Avenue, Cudworth is urging women of all ages to join her and sign up now for the 5k or 10k events which take place across Yorkshire this summer.

Carol, who works as a technical advisory engineer, was diagnosed with breast cancer almost two years ago.

She said: "It was a terrible shock when I was told I had cancer. I just couldn't believe it was happening to me."

Carol underwent surgery to have a mastectomy and reconstruction. She did not require chemotherapy treatment but instead was given the cancer drug tamoxifen to take for five years.
