A MAKEOVER of streets in Barnsley town centre has been given a financial boost after Barnsley Council secured a further £1.264 million towards the project.

North Midland Construction PLC has been appointed to carry out the works, which start in June and are expected to take 11 months to complete.

The areas being improved are Eldon Street; Regent Street South; Hanson Street; Royal Street; Regent Street; Eastgate; Market Hill and a footpath on Church Street.

It includes paving in natural Yorkstone and granite, new street lighting and new street furniture, which covers things such as benches and bins. Roads will also be resurfaced and crossings improved.

Geoff Poyzer from the appointed construction firm said it will transform Barnsley into 'one of the most attractive destinations in the North'.
