THE Barnsley branch of a charity which helps former and serving armed forces members is moving because there isn't enough funding for its headquarters.

SSAFA, the Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen's Families Association, was based in an office on Doncaster Road, Barnsley, until a lack of funds forced the charity's South Yorkshire branch to withdraw funding for rent on its premises.

Geoff Dyson, 60, who is SSAFA's divisional secretary for Barnsley, put it down to 'cutting back on expenditure'.

He said: "We've been looking for new premises and fortunately we've found a new home at the TA centre on Wakefield Road in Barnsley and we'll be moving in there at the end of the month.

"We've got links with the TA anyway, particularly the Yorkshire Regiment, and the office is being given to us for free by the TA centre.

"It just means we have to find the funding for running the office. We don't know how we will do that at this moment in time but we need to find about £2,000 a year.

"Last year we helped more than 100 clients and raised more than £56,000 and that's just in Barnsley and Penistone."
