TWO sisters who lost their mother to cervical cancer when she was just 44 have organised a charity night to mark her 60th birthday.

Mal Taylor died 16 years ago when her daughters Kathryn Abbott and Kirsty Taylor were 15 and seven respectively.

She had suffered some symptoms but delayed having them checked out.

Kathryn, 30, of Columbia Street, Worsbrough Common, said she believed the outcome may have been different had Mal sought medical help earlier.

"Mum was 42 when she was diagnosed and was given six months to live but survived for another year.

"She had a hysterectomy, but by that time it had spread to her hip. She had two doses of chemotherapy and lots of radiotherapy. It all seemed to happen very quick.

"I would definitely encourage people to go for their check ups and I think they should be more regular and start earlier than age 25."

Kathryn and Kirsty, 23, of Spencer Street, have organised a fun run in Locke Park on July 5 and a charity night at Highstone WMC on July 18 where there will be four live bands, a Keith Lemon tribute act and a raffle.

The proceeds will be split between Macmillan Nurses and the Barnsley Hospice.
