A LOCAL charity which helps families and friends of people with drug and alcohol problems will close at the end of May.

Barnsley Beacon Support Services, set up 17 years ago, is run by volunteers and offers a telephone helpline, one-to-one and group support sessions, respite activities and social events.

But will close at the end of May after financial support dwindled.

The closure was made public late yesterday afternoon in an email from Gillian Andrews, chairman to the board of governors.

It stated: “It is with much sadness and regret that Barnsley Beacon Support Services is proposing to close the service to carers on May 31.

“This is due to a lack of support and funding to allow us to continue delivering the service to carers and family members living with addiction across the whole of the borough and surrounding areas.

“Unless there is a significant input of funds before the above date there is no other option but to close our doors after 17 years.”
