Barnsley Youth Choir is recording a Christmas single with the same man who helped produce The Clash's first album and worked with the Beach Boys and Abba.

The choir, which formed in 2009, is aiming to take on the X-Factor winner after working with producer Simon Humphrey at his £1m Chairworks studio in Leeds to release a single that will raise money for Barnsley Hospice.

Mr Humphrey is well-known in the music industry and also worked with artists such as the Culture Club and Marc Bolan.

Barnsley Youth Choir has more than 180 members, aged between seven and 19, and is led by musical director Mat Wright, a teacher at Horizon Community College.

The choir will be split into two sections for the recording, with the younger members singing Winter Wonderland and older members singing O Holy Night. O Holy Night is the song being marketed as the single.

Mat said the choir is 'buzzed and excited' about the single and has set its sights on going national.
