Barnsley has lost out to Huddersfield as the location for a golden postbox to mark Ed Clancy winning gold at the London Olympic Games.
Royal Mail has said for every Team GB gold medal won at this year’s Olympic and Paralympic Games, it will paint one of its red postboxes gold in the ‘home town’ of the winning athlete.
Endurance cyclist Ed Clancy, 27, won gold in the cycling men’s team pursuit. He was born in Barnsley, near Penistone, and went to Springvale Primary School before moving to Huddersfield.
But Royal Mail has chosen to paint a Huddersfield postbox golden, on Railway Street, to mark his medal haul.
When asked why Barnsley was snubbed as a location, a spokesman for Royal Mail said postboxes were chosen ‘based on a range of potential sites’.
He added: “This could be where they were born, where they grew up or where they presently live and we look at all these factors before reaching a considered choice.”
