THE COST of issuing white sacks to residents to recycle paper as part of the council's new waste collection scheme has been revealed by the Chronicle.

A Barnsley Council spokesman said 106,000 white sacks have been sent out across the borough at a cost of £112,000, and the cost 'compares favourably' with that of supplying a wheeled bin to each household, which he said would have cost £2 million.

One of the reasons for switching from the blue bin to a white sack is the rise in email and electronic copies of paperwork means there's less paper to recycle.
