AREAS of Goldthorpe blighted by rubbish have been targeted by Barnsley Council in an effort to improve the area's image.

The project has been led by the council's enforcement team in response to ongoing problems of rubbish accumulating in the front and back gardens on and around Beever Street and Frederick Street.

Councillors say the problems have been exacerbated by a high number of absentee landlords who care little about the area and a large number of empty houses.

The environmental protection act's section 92 order has been used to first warn residents or landlords about clearing up rubbish before enforcement and eventually prosecution is taken.

The Chronicle has learned that five people in Goldthorpe area are threatened with prosecution over the issue.
