A COUNCIL tax rise of 1.9 per cent is being proposed by Barnsley Council, the first increase in four years.
It was agreed by the council's ruling cabinet on Wednesday and works out at a 44p increase a week for band D properties, about £22.81 a year, and a 29p a week for band A homes, about £15.20 a year.
However, the police and fire authorities have yet to formally set their own council tax requirements, which will affect the overall rate to be paid.
Council leader Sir Steve Houghton said: "I think it's right that 1.9 per cent will protect some front-line services being cut despite £27m in cuts to find next year.
"People are now beginning to see the pressure on services. It is a very difficult decision. It would be nice to be able to freeze it forever. We have to make sure the financial position is as sound as it can be."
