A crime-fighting veteran in her 80s who has helped keep villains off the streets of Hoyland Common for 28 years is retiring.
Margaret Hague, 83, will step down as Neighbourhood Watch area co-ordinator on July 18 after her service of nearly three decades.
She founded Hoyland Common's Neighbourhood Watch group after being contacted by elderly people concerned about crime.
"It was in Tinker Lane and the people there were asking me if a police officer could patrol the lane, showing a more visible police presence," said Margaret.
"It ended up with me knocking on doors asking if people wanted to set up a Neighbourhood Watch - and they said yes."
Margaret, born and bred in Hoyland Common and the daughter of a miner, has been a driving force in the group ever since and there are concerns it will collapse when she leaves, as no-one has expressed interest in taking over her role. But she has offered to 'train up' anyone who comes forward.
Margaret has won numerous accolades for her work including South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue's Outstanding Voluntary Service award and the Rose Hogg award for partnership working.
