THE agency that runs the Cudworth branch of Santander has been served six months notice by the bank.

It means the branch, which currently provides limited banking services such as payment into accounts, has to cease operations as Santander before August.

Carol Burton, who runs the branch on Barnsley Road, said the move had come as a complete surprise.

"We aren't sure what we are going to do yet. There are a few things we are considering. This is my family's livelihood, I have to do something."

Steve Pateman, head of UK banking at Santander said: "Part of enabling customers to choose how they deal with us, is making sure that all of our retail branches offer full banking.

"Consolidating our operations is a vital next step for Santander, allowing us to concentrate on further enhancements and investment in, our proprietary branch network, including branch openings and refurbishments."

A statement from Santander said 139 independent branches have been served notice as a part of the consolidation move. After the closure, the nearest branch will be in Barnsley town centre.
