VOLUNTEERS cleaning up fly-tipping in Elsecar Park were horrified to find a dead dog in a plastic sack which had been dumped with other rubbish.
The Friends of Elsecar Park also found remains of rabbits and pheasants in the garbage which had been tossed down a small ravine on the reservoir side of the park near the far end of the dam wall on Water Lane.
The Friends came across the grisly discovery when they were having one of their regular tidy-ups at the beauty spot, which is popular with walkers and people having picnics.
Chairwoman of the Friends, Linda Webster, said the dead dog had been placed in the sack and then dumped. She said: "You can imagine the stench. We had a clear-up about six months ago and this is what we come back to find in what is a lovely little woodland area.
"How people can do something like this is really just beyond me. We are surrounded by beautiful nature and they just want to destroy it."
The group collected eight sacks of rubbish and also found a couple of dumped car tyres and vehicle parts as well as bottles, cans and food packets.
