A FORMER church which houses a charity furniture shop could be demolished to make way for a block of flats.
An application to knock down the former Stairfoot Methodist Church, on School Street, has been submitted by Brenda Weldon, of Mayfield, Monk Bretton.
The application said the flats are aimed at small families or single parents and it is assumed that minimal parking will be required.
Matt Wright, chief executive of the hospice, said: "We have had a furniture shop in Stairfoot for a number of years and it is well supported and very profitable. The news that the landlord has put in for planning permission to demolish this site and build residential flats instead is a shock and a concern to us.
"This would presumably mean the eviction of the hospice and us needing to find alternative premises."
