THE multi-storey car park and semi-open market will be flattened as part of the redevelopment of the town centre, the council confirmed this week.

The Jumble Lane level crossing could also be confined to history, replaced by a walkway leading pedestrians from the interchange over the railway line, straight into the market.

The £41m redevelopment plans were announced in the Chronicle in January but latest developments have only been revealed this week.

The adjacent Metropolitan Centre and indoor market hall are structurally sound, and will be stripped back to its concrete skeleton for a thorough refurbishment.

The whole project scheduled to be complete by September 2017.
