A BARNSLEY MP is demanding urgent action to help the soaring number of people forced to rely on food banks after figures revealed the number of food parcels handed out in Barnsley is up more than ten per cent.

Barnsley East MP Michael Dugher condemned as ‘shocking and ‘shameful’ the steep rise in the number of adults and children now using local food banks.

Almost 4,400 used food banks run by the Trussell Trust in Barnsley in the last 12 months.

According to the trust in the last six months from April to September alone volunteers in Barnsley delivered 2,113 emergency food supplies to adults and children.

A total of 866 of the emergency aid parcels went to children.
