AN EXTRA £8.3m will be poured into the council’s flagship town centre regeneration to speed up construction to make sure work on the retail part of the scheme starts on time.

Council chiefs approved the additional investment for The Glass Works on Wednesday which the council says is a result of the scheme increasing in size by 25 per cent and the need to meet opening time scale requirements from key retail and leisure operators.

A report seen by councillors said the the new market, public library and public realm needs to be accelerated, as early completion of the work is crucial so that construction on new shops and restaurants can begin on time.

In response to the further investment in the town centre scheme, cabinet spokesman Coun Roy Miller told colleagues: “The town centre will be here for the next 30 years and we have to get it right the first time.”
