Chris Guest has handed over the High Street business after more than 40 years in charge.
Five generations of the family have donned the apron in the shop but Chris, 65, has sold the business to Hoyland couple David and Jane Laban who took over ownership last week.
Chris started as a nine-year-old helping his dad out in the shop, wrapping meat and helping him to clean up.
He has become a familiar face to many in Hoyland and was hoping to keep the business in the family. He had three daughters but, Chris said, with not having a son he has been unable to hand over the reins.
David, 43, of George Street has run construction company DAL Construction for 20 years.
He said the butchers will still keep the same staff and suppliers and will continue with the same name.
And, while he is not a butcher, David said he is passionate about keeping the shop going and ensuring it remains part of the community.
Chris said he had always wanted to keep the shop as a butchers and thought Dave and Jane's offer was a very good one.
"When Dave and Jane came along and gave me the opportunity to keep it as a butchers and he wanted to keep my staff on I thought It was too good an opportunity to miss.
"I will miss the people and the customers and the banter that we have had."
But he will still be around over the coming weeks covering for staff on holiday.
Jane will be a new face behind the counter while Dave will be managing behind the scenes.
"I think if it was to close a lot of people would miss it," he said.
