RSPCA inspectors have a job on finding the owners of a wayward ferret.

A male ferret found his way into Wombwell Job Centre on October 27.

The staff at the Kings Road branch managed to place a box over him and called the RSPCA.

Inspector Paula Clemence collected him and took him to Peak Vets in Sheffield, who gave him lodging until an owner could be found.

Inspector Clemence said: “This mischievous ferret was probably on the hunt for food but ended up job hunting instead. He must have walked along the pavement of the busy high street before he strolled into the job centre.

“He probably escaped from someone’s garden as he was healthy, just very hungry, so we are hoping he must be someone’s pet.”

The RSPCA is appealing for his owner to come forward so they can be reunited.

His picture was posted on the Peak Vets’ Facebook page, the Wombwell Job Centre page and Pets Located but so far no one has been in touch.

Insp Clemence added: “Sadly the cheeky fellow wasn’t microchipped and we are struggling to find his owner. It is so important to have your pets microchipped whether they are a dog, cat or small rabbit or ferret. Microchipping your pets and keeping the details up-to-date is the only foolproof way of ensuring they can be found if they are lost or go missing.

“I pick up a lot of stray ferrets and rabbits in South Yorkshire and I can only think of one rabbit who was microchipped. I’ve never picked up a chipped ferret out of the many I’ve collected.

“It is a legal requirement to microchip dogs but some people might not realise that they can also get smaller animals such as rabbits or ferrets microchipped as well. Speak to your vet and ask them for advice on microchipping your ferret.”

No one has come forward to claim the ferret, which has been moved to a ferret rescue in Huddersfield.
