These dramatic scenes show firefighters rescuing a horse which was found stuck in a bog in Darton.

The 12-year-old Appaloosa cross breed was discovered by owner Abbie Belcher five feet down an embankment trapped in mud. The schoolgirl made the discovery when she went to see the horse on Monday at the livery yard where it is kept, off Barnsley Road.

Her mother, who did not want to be named, said: "We are not sure what happened. The horse got stuck and we cannot thank the fire service enough for what they did.

"My daughter found her and it was very upsetting for us and could have been a nasty outcome but we're just happy it wasn't."

She said the horse is OK. Two fire crews from Tankersley and Adwick attended at 4.05pm and spent about an hour manoeuvring the horse out of the bog using an animal sling.
