A SUCCESSFUL ex-pupil from Athersley South Primary has given more than £5,000 to fund a football course for the school.

Martyn Gill, 54, was born in Dodworth and now runs a wealth management company in North Leeds. He attended Athersley South between 1965 and 1971 where he developed his keen enthusiasm for football.

He said: "I just want the kids to have some fun.

"The fun that I had running about on that field. That's what I'm interested in. I wanted to give something back at a level which it would be more useful."

The money Martyn has given will pay for 12 weeks of coaching from staff at Barnsley Football Club, the school's own kit, new footballs, nets and training equipment. He will continue to fund the course each year.
