The future of the toilets on High Street in Wombwell is in question following a council meeting on the 'disgraceful' state of the public amenity.
The issue was raised at a council meeting last week after repeated problems with flooding, foul smell and abuse of the amenity in recent years.
Couns Margaret Morgan and Dick Wraith said a cost analysis was being drawn up for how much the toilets cost to run and reported all options were on the table regarding their future, including closing them altogether and either selling the building or knocking it down.
Other options considered were securing funds for a complete overhaul of the facility and charging for entry as well as passing on responsibility to the newly-formed Community First Forum.
The forum is made up of councillors, business owners and residents and decides how more than £8,000 of public money is to be spent in Wombwell each year.
The proposals were then brought before the forum yesterday. Speaking before the meeting, treasurer David Cole, also of the High Street Committee, said he would do everything he could to make the case for keeping the toilets as he believed they were vital for Wombwell to remain a vibrant shopping centre.
Coun Wraith added: "The toilets are a disgrace and need some money spending on them but we've made it clear as members we want to keep them."
