CENTURION George Parkin reached the milestone birthday last weekend and his niece believes it's all down to him growing his own food when he was younger.
George, of Broomhead Road, Wombwell, celebrated his 100th birthday with a tea party with family and neighbours on Sunday.His niece Ann Hart, 70, knows their family were brought up eating homegrown vegetables.
She said: "All the Parkins are long livers and my husband says that bodes well for us.
"It really is some achievement. I know they were brought up on Park Street where they grew a lot of their own food. Maybe that's the secret.
"Women do tend to live longer but George is still going strong. His brother Joseph is 93 and will likely get to 100 too."
George, a bachelor, served in the Second World War in India and received the Burma Star.
He received a telegram and card from the Queen to mark his birthday and one from Secretary of State for Works and Pensions, Iain Duncan-Smith.
