A BARNSLEY school girls' cricket team has lifted a silver trophy at the 'home of cricket' Lord's.

The Horizon Community College under 13s' team had competed against more than 730 schools across the country in the Lady Taverners Indoor Cricket Competition since it began in September.

They attended the final at Lord's after being crowned regional champions, and finished second on the day.

Coach Adrian Darlow said: "It was an absolutely superb achievement. It was a very tense last match. They managed to get a run out on the very last ball of the last game to finish second.

"They've worked incredibly hard, training every Tuesday since September, I'm incredibly proud of them.

"It's particularly impressive when you consider only three of the 11 girls play regular cricket elsewhere."

They played four eight-over matches at the event, which ran like a mini-league of regional champions.

The girls also enjoyed a tour of the historic ground including the long room, the media centre, and the England dressing room, as well as meeting some of the England ladies' team.
