GOLDTHORPE will be without any banks after Yorkshire Bank announced the closure of its branch.

The loss of the bank is considered to be a huge blow for businesses and residents.

Businesswoman Jenny Freeborough, 44, who runs Cafe Bijou on High Street, predicted the move after NatWest moved out last summer.

"It's going to be another empty building in Goldthorpe and we are becoming a ghost town because people shop after they bank. How can they do that without a bank?

"It feels like they've just put two crosses on each end of Goldthorpe. When Natwest closed it had a huge effect on business and this is going to be worse still. The harder we try the more we get pushed. I haven't got the energy to complain this time."

The nearest Yorkshire Bank is in Mexborough and local people believe that travelling there will prove too far for some.

Chief Executive David Thorburn said: "No branch closure is welcomed by customers or staff, I understand that, which is why we are working to minimise the effects these changes have on them."
