APPLICATIONS are being prepared for funding to renovate the former chapel in Wombwell cemetery into a building for community use.

It would cost about £130,000 to restore the grade II listed building, according to Friends of Wombwell Cemetery member Mike Bretton.

Some money has already been donated towards the target from the community first and devolved budgets.

A grant of £15,000 from Section 106 funds has also been approved to take the group's total up to almost £25,000.

The Section 106 money has come as a result of a donation from a building project on Barnburgh Lane, Goldthorpe.

The group hopes both WREN and Heritage Lottery Funding will be able to provide the rest of the money and applications for funding will be submitted shortly.

Mike said: "There are umpteen possible uses for it.

"It could be used as a crèche, for displays, a mini museum or somewhere to show films."
