Two Girl Guides from New Lodge will embark on the trip of a lifetime' when they fly out to India next year.

Olivia Butterwood, 16, and Charlotte Haigh, 15, will stay in the Pune region of India for 18 days to work as volunteers on a community project, likely to involve children and orphans.

They are members of the Athersley Girl Guides and both attend Carlton Community College.

Olivia said they are both excited and couldn't believe they had been chosen to go.

"We have seen what it is like on TV, and how bad the poverty can be, but to be there in real life will be something else," she said. "I think it will be hard but it will make us grateful for what we have got."

They each have to find £2,200 to cover costs of the trip and have already organised a number of events to pull in the cash.

They are also looking for sponsors.
