HALF of all football pitches in the borough are in poor condition, according to a major review of Barnsley’s sports facilities.

The state of pitches is laid bare in new council report looking at how it will meet rising demand on sports facilities now and in the future as the population grows.

It says Barnsley has a good range of sport and leisure facilities overall but some are starting to show their age and will need replacing in the coming years, particularly council-owned sports halls and swimming pools.

It found that half of the 213 grass football pitches in the borough are of poor quality, with only four per cent deemed ‘good’ and the rest classed as ‘standard’.
