RESIDENTS in Highgate are being consulted about proposals for a new Aldi store in the town.

The discount supermarket is considering building a new store off Barnsley Road.

Letters have been sent out to neighbours and a consultation meeting was held last week even though a planning application has not yet been submitted to Barnsley Council.

Dearne South Coun May Noble said people in Highgate are largely in favour of the store which she said would create around 40 jobs.

Building work for the separate Aldi distribution centre off Commercial Road in Goldthorpe remains on course with it due to open next year.

Recruitment for 400 jobs at the centre, which will distribute goods to Aldi stores throughout Yorkshire, remains ongoing and application forms are available from Goldthorpe job centre on High Street.

The recruitment is being carried out by Baxter Personnel and part of the staff will be in place by Christmas for dummy runs to increase efficiency when open.
