REFURBISHMENT work has just been completed by Berneslai Homes on properties of historic importance in Elsecar.

The one and two bedroom council owned terrace cottages on Station Row and Old Row were built in the early and mid-nineteenth century.

The four homes in Station Row were Grade II listed in 1974. The other three properties are not listed but are within the Elsecar conservation area.

The cottages were built to house miners and foundry workers and belonged to the Fitzwilliam Estate but were gifted to Barnsley Council in the 1960s.

Stonework has been repaired, replacement doors and windows have been designed to mirror original historic designs and they have had damp proofing, electrical upgrades, and new kitchens and bathrooms.

Berneslai Homes board member Coun Robin Franklin said: "I am pleased and heartened we have got these listed properties back into use for social housing."
