FORMER Goldthorpe colliery land once marked for employment purposes will now be used for housing development.

The land at Kingsmark Way will now tie in with part of the Goldthorpe Masterplan to rejuvenate the town and its image.

A proposed 125 houses will be built on the site by the Ogden Group.

A council spokesman further explained the planning decision: "The site has a history of similar planning applications being granted and is shown as a proposed residential allocation in the council's development sites and places plan document.

"The scheme satisfies national and local planning policy and represents a suitable development proposal for the site."

A bigger population in Goldthorpe will increase numbers going to school and planning permission granted for a new primary school near Doncaster Road and Main Street does take into account this new project.
