A Hoyland couple have warned that torrential storms forecast this week will cause flash foods at homes - including their own - on the edge of a building site.

Geoff and Julie Priest have been using sandbags for more than 15 months to stave off flooding at their home at Milton Crescent, Hoyland, next to the Guinness Northern Counties 12-bungalow development.

Julie, who has said she is on the point of a breakdown due to stress about flooding, wrote in desperation to the firm.

She said: "Please take a look at the headlines. This is another week of terrible stress and worry for my husband and me due to the changes in the land and drains made to land owned by Guinness.

"Nearly two years is not an acceptable period of time for you to come up with a solution and fix the potential flooding issue Guinness has inflicted on to our home and the worry you have caused us."

The couple say changes to land levels and blocking of drains means rainwater comes down their drive and under their house, causing damp.

The housing company has previously apologised for delays, saying these were caused when the original building contractors went into receivership and works had to stop.

Sandra Burke, the firm's area programme manager, said a project manager would make further contact with the couple to "update them on progress for the temporary works we are proposing to reduce the surface water runoff at the property."
