A BARNSLEY man who suffered brain damage in a motor racing accident has been awarded the funds he needs to move into a home more suitable to his needs.
Mechanic Peter Corbett, 55, will be dependent on carers for the rest of his life following the accident at the Rowrah Stadium circuit, near Whitehaven, Cumbria in 2006.
Mr Corbett, of Della Avenue Pogmoor, sued through his wife, Anita, who this week accepted a confidential settlement which will ensure he gets all the help he needs in future.
The High Court in London was told a chunk of the payout is to be used to purchase a bungalow for the couple, which will be more suitable for Mr Corbett's disabilities.
The court heard Mr Corbett, an experienced rider, was on a bike powered by a 100cc Yamaha RSX engine with his friend, Philip Hales, in a side car.
At a bend, they left the track, crossed some grass, smashed through a v-shaped barrier made of tyres and into a parked ambulance, causing devastating injury.
Last year, High Court judge, Mr Justice King, ruled that circuit owner, Cumbria Kart Racing Club, and race organiser, Tracksport Challenge Limited, were 90 per cent liable for the smash.
However, the judgment to award compensation was delivered nine months after the trial of the case, leading to a decision to allow the defendants' permission to appeal against Mr Justice King's decision.
This week Mrs Corbett went back to court in London to accept the settlement on her husband's behalf.
