MORE than 140 woollen hats have been knitted for premature babies at Barnsley Hospital's neonatal units.

Staff at Barnsley College's early years and care department held a knitathon, raising more than £1,000 for Children in Need.

The hats were handed over by Karen Mason, whose idea the knitathon was, and Claire Griffin, whose son spent time in the special care baby unit.

Adi Benson, early years and care course leader, said: "Everything snowballed after Karen came up with the initial idea because so many of the staff were very keen to get involved. It was a real team effort and people grabbed the opportunity to knit whenever they could, while other staff members supported our efforts with their generous donations for Children in Need."
