COLOURFUL pub landlord Anthony Youel turned blue in honour of a French artist.

The art-loving 53-year-old, who runs The Monkey in Thurgoland, painted himself to recreate Henri Matisse's Blue Nudes, four paper cut-outs of a seated female figure which currently form part of an exhibition at the Tate Modern in London.

"I've got a love of Matisse and I just thought it would be a nice tribute," he said.

"All I try to do is make people happy and pursue my artwork. Obviously I'm not going to be everybody's cup of tea."

About 45 people turned out to watch the live exhibit in the pub car park on Sunday and there was further interest from motorists passing along Bagger Wood Road.
