MACMILLAN Cancer Support is appealing for help to raise £150,000 to fund cancer care services for people in Barnsley.
It says an alarmingly high rate of cancer in the town means urgent investment is needed to help more people live with and beyond cancer.
The charity is looking for enthusiastic and committed people to join a new fundraising group to reach the appeal's target.
Local fundraising manager, Phoebe Drinkwater, said the group will work together to plan and co-ordinate events in Barnsley, as well as inspiring others.
She said: "This is a really exciting time for Barnsley and we have an incredible opportunity to change so many people's lives who are affected by cancer.
"This group will be a lot of fun and really will be a chance to give something back to your local community."
The Chronicle is supporting the appeal, which will help fund services for people affected by cancer that will increase diagnosis rates and improve support during and after treatment.
This includes services such as a mobile information bus; a specialist cancer advisor for GPs who will educate and guide GP practices as well as health professionals and community services in the town.
